Rainy Days and Mondays Getting You Down? Nah.

12 Great Things to Do When it Pours

By Debbie L. Sklar

Karen Carpenter may have sung about “Rainy Days And Mondays” always getting her down. But ask most SoCal residents, and they will gladly say, “Let it rain.”

Forecasters are predicting torrential rains in our region, thanks to El Niño, and many of us are far from sad. Perhaps the drought will be no more — we can only hope.

And as we long to hear the pitter-patter of raindrops on our rooftops, here are 12 rainy day suggestions you can consider when it finally pours. Remember, kids aren’t the only ones who enjoy wet weather. We adults can too. After all, many of us are just big kids at heart.

1. Light scented candles around the house and savor the sweet aromas they exude.

2. Enjoy a perfect opportunity to finally go to that local museum’s new exhibit and get cultured.

3. Grab a seat by a window at a local café and sip a cappuccino or a glass of wine. Try to picture Gene Kelly’s dancing in Singin’ in the Rain.

4. Splash in puddles like children do (Gene Kelly again, anyone?). Get out those new rain boots that you went shopping for but have yet to wear.

5. Take a trip down memory lane by flipping through an old photo album or a high school yearbook.

6. Choose a book you’ve been meaning to read and snuggle up with it under a cozy blanket.

7. Binge-watch a favorite TV show that you haven’t seen for months or catch an old movie.

8. Walk along the beach and listen to the rhythmic sound of falling rain coupled with the crashing of the waves.

9. Play cards or a board game with friends, the kids or your significant other. Ever hear of Go Fish?

10. Take a long, hot bubble bath, add music, dim the lights and luxuriate.

11. Bake your favorite chocolate chip cookies and savor the special ambiance created (as well as the taste!).

12. Begin a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle.
