New wave treatments to help us feel alive again

Most Americans, from age 25 to 85, have a desire to look their best. A large part of our self-esteem depends on how much we like what we see in the mirror, and we consider it a compliment when someone says we look rested, healthy, or young. Yet, aging is a fact of life. It is also a trend. It’s estimated that by the year 2030, more than half of Americans will be 40 years of age or older.

Happily, several exciting new non-invasive treatments and technologies are being introduced to effectively address the signs of aging. As we greet the year 2021, we owe it to ourselves to take a good long look at what’s available to us now. After all, looking good and feeling good go hand in hand.

We asked Dr. Raja Nalluri, the owner of Nalluri Plastic Surgery & Laser Center in La Jolla, about some of today’s most promising non-invasive treatments through technology.

This non-invasive muscle sculpting device adjusts to the individual’s fitness level, shape, and goals to strengthen, firm, and tone muscles in the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. It applies a unique multidirectional stimulation (MDS) technology to deliver three treatment options replicating intensified crunch, squat, and twisting actions. Preliminary data on treatments with the truSculpt flex device shows an average of 30 percent increase in muscle mass and a modest reduction in fat thickness. Dr. Nalluri reports that he can treat up to eight areas in each 45–minute session. “I’m seeing results in people of a variety of physical conditions,” Dr. Nalluri says. “For those that are already exercising at high intensity, these treatments act as a supplement utilizing MDS to stress the muscle in a different manner and beyond what the individual is currently doing. It can help them over a plateau they may have reached.”

Described by patients as painless and relaxing like a hot stone massage, TightSculpting is a unique dual-wavelength, non-invasive laser treatment for sculpting and skin tightening on many body areas. Two different laser energies provided through Nd:YAG and Erbium:YAG laser technologies are blended to cause hyperthermic fat cell destruction—essentially melting fat. Laser collagen remodeling is then used to tighten skin and smooth wrinkles or cellulite. What excites Dr. Nalluri most about TightSculpting is that it can penetrate deeply into the skin to create thermal effects without damaging the skin surface or causing any pain.

“Skin tightening works by remodeling and rebuilding the collagen fibers under the skin,” Dr. Nalluri explains. “These fibers help strengthen the skin, improve wrinkles, and reduce cellulite.” The procedure is fast, safe, and non-invasive, with absolutely no downtime required.

Those familiar with dermabrasion and older CO2 laser peels can readily recall their discomfort and weeks of downtime that follow each procedure. Skin resurfacing and rejuvenation is now more optimally achieved through erbium laser technologies because lasers are programmable and easier to control than traditional peels. Laser resurfacing can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, scars, and acne. Depending upon the desired outcome, Dr. Nalluri will opt for a non-ablative laser beam that works by heating the underlying skin tissue,

or an ablative laser beam, which removes the top layer of skin. Treatments extend from light touch-ups to deep collagen remodeling. “The results are not comparable to surgery, which is far more effective, but my patients see noticeable improvements,” Dr. Nalluri says. “The before and after photos posted on my website speak for themselves.”

Dr. Nalluri also offers new off-label laser treatments to tighten the soft palate inside the mouth to reduce snoring and intra-vaginal treatments to tighten tissues, improve lubrication, and function.

Dr. Nalluri reminds us that the best treatment plan varies from individual to individual. There are multiple methods, and the treatment plans should always be first planned and discussed with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
