A Short History of
CHAIRS & BENCHES

Looking at the timeline of the chair is the perfect way to examine the different periods of history and a great look atour evolution as human beings. Before the 16th century only kings or church hierarchy sat in chairs—everyone else stood or used stools or benches. During the Renaissance, chairs became more decorative and luxurious. Rich fabrics, exotic woods and gold were used. After the 16th century, wooden chairs were relegated to furniture for everyone. By Victorian times, the middle and upper class had several types of chairs in the home, including dining chairs, armchairs and a low bench by the fire. And by the 20th century, wood was not the only material that was used to make chairs— frames were often made with iron, plastic, plywood and more. Even though the grandness of the chair has diminished over the years the symbolism has been retained in our modern language. A “chair” presides over meetings and the “first chair” is where the premier musician in an orchestra sits.
