EYES ON THE PRIZE
What does it take to win the renowned Opening Day Hat Contest at Del Mar Racetrack? Winners share more than $4,000 in prizes, so we asked Deena Von Yokes, the creative director and media spokesperson for the contest to give us some tips. “Think big, bold, creative, and fun,” Deena says. “If you can think it, create it, and wear it—go for it!” Hats are judged in four categories: Best Racing Theme, Most Glamorous, Best Fascinator (headpiece), and Best Flowers. This year, Opening Day is Friday, July 21. Contestants are invited to sign up as early as 12 noon in the middle of Plaza de Mexico to the west of the paddock area, by the large fountain. A panel of judges selects the finalists for each category and then passes their choices along to the celebrity judges who choose the Grand Prize winner. Winners are announced after the sixth race. COME SALUTE THE USS RECRUIT!
Liberty Station, which once served as San Diego’s Naval Training Center (NTC), is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary this year. As part of the celebration, Liberty Station has launched The USS Recruit Exhibit, a “dummy” ship to give us a unique, historic experience. The exhibit includes photos of the USS Recruit’s construction and 1980s remodel, as well as architectural renderings and photographs of Naval recruits performing strategic drills and training activities. In addition, there are several “sound shower” audio and visual experiences that highlight the impactful stories of NTC alumni and their time at the NTC. Admission is free and open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 4 pm. For more info, visit 100libertystation.com
